Hill Training - The 3 key benefits

Although Ealing is not a particulary hilly area, there are a few hills to choose from and Hill Training is an important component of the Ealing Eagles Interval Training schedule.

The Hill Training sessions typically take place on Corfton Road in Ealing.  For these sessions the meeting point is on Haven Green (opposite Ealing Broadway Station).

There are 3 main benefits to hill training:

Improve race performance on uphill stretches

The obvious one. When you come to a hill in a race you will find it much easier having trained on them.

Aerobic Endurance

When you reach the top of a tough hill and you are usually out of breath. Repeat this several times and you are a really working your aerobic system.

Speed

As you are going slower up a hill you would think this is not improved. However, how fast you are depends on both speed and strength. Speed is the natural speed you are born on which is difficult to improve. Strength however you can work on. That is why sprinters spend so much time in the gym – but we don’t want to bulk up like them!

As you working against gravity on hills it improves your leg strength and this increase in leg power will improve your speed
