Brighton Half Marathon

Race Date:
Sun, 19/02/2012

Despite its being mired in the controversy of 400 yards of added distance affecting the results, the 2012 Brighton Half Marathon was cheerful, exciting and highly successful for those Eagles who ran, as well as our committed supporters and volunteers.

The high level of participation by Ealing Eagles, as well as a spate of PBs are evidence of the success of this event (chip times posted below). It was a bright, sunny morning only a few degrees above 0, with surprisingly little wind for a race on the seafront. Most of the course was along the Marina, giving superb views of the Downs on one side and the sea on the other. The I-shaped course meant that club runners could greet and encourage each other along the way, and onlookers could cheer runners several times, building a lively atmosphere for all.

The surprising addition of 400 yards to the official 13.1mile distance of this race was noted by several Eagles as they checked GPS watches at the finish. Indeed, the organisers admitted the human error in marking the course, and published adjusted times on the website. However, this disappointing and presumably unnecessary pickle did little to detract from a fantastic overall experience.

Unconfirmed rumours suggest that a group of Ealing Eagles went for an impromptu swim on Brighton beach despite the near-freezing weather, and that photographs may emerge of those who dared to bare... Clearly the excitement of this half-marathon was contagious, to say the least.

Our heartfelt collective thanks go out to Jane Armstrong, who tirelessly coordinated accommodation and meals for the race entrants, as well as the other Eagles who came to lend their support, and volunteer for the event.
